Incentive: Magazine Article! Can I Drive for Dollars?

Okay, okay. I know it: I've been such a slacker about learning to drive.
I use any excuse to delay my movement behind a steering wheel.

Well now, I have good reason to let go of the mental brakes. A magazine editor has contacted me about my driving phobia. I can either write a feature or be profiled. The hitch: first I have to get a license!!!

secret whine: Why can't I just write about being phobic? Permantely Parked!!! Now that's a headline!

Seriously, I've wanted to write an article about my driving fears for some time.
But can I do it? Can I make myself drive for the lure of headlines, money & glossy pages?

Will vanity win out over fear? Will ego outrace crippling phobias...

Stay tuned. I have no idea. I'm clueless for now.

I sent you an email. I totally hear your phobia. I am telling you this is agoraphobia in it's finest form. Get a car you want to show off in, a car you feel "safe" in, take your time adjusting your mirrors and seat belt and having a plan to just drive around and see the sights. You are missing out!

I googled "driving phobia" and came across your blog.

I used to drive on freeways, etc., but have become phobic of going fast. I get around locally okay.

Now that I have kids, I want to overcome my phobia in order to take them farther from home.

How is your quest going? Driving really can be fun--hope you turn out to like it!

Have you figure out the root cause yet? Is there any particular reason of your driving phobia?

Best of luck with this one! I have yet to conquer the phobia myself...

I cannot drive either. My parents would not allow us to get a license until 18 years-by that time I had been in many minor accidents with friends and too neurotic to drive!

Hope you update soon. I am severely afraid to learn to drive and looking for any insights...

Anxiety disorders, in addition to generalized anxiety, include phobias, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. For millions of sufferers anxiety disorders are disruptive, debilitating and often the reason for loss of job and serious problems in family relationships. http://www.xanax-effects.com/

Well, I don't see what the problem is with not driving. It's a big expense, just remember that, and if you can get where you need to go without driving yourself, just do it. come visit my blog

Sharon, did you ever get your license? I got my license at the age of 26 (2004), after almost giving birth at home I learned really quickly. I won't lie, I'm still very scared of driving and it is now 2009 and I barely drive anywhere. I'm afraid of cars period, I thought I was over it once I got my license but I never did. Today you might catch me going two blocks in the car, that's it. I can't drive any further or I start getting the shakes. Would love to know how you are doing today with driving.

Love this! I thought I was the only one!!!!! I have just turned 30 and I still don't have my license. Not sure at all when the phobia started but I just booked an appointment with a cognitive therapist who will hopefully help me through this. Thank you for sharing your experiences - I feel like letting go of the shame has been a mega step forward in itself.

Oh boy, you are not alone. But a driving phobia is not incompatible with a writing career. I just blogged about how my old highway phobia led to my latest novel, "Cars from a Marriage."

Good luck!

Sharon, I had a bad accident when I was 18 years old. Ever since then I, too, have had a driving phobia. I find it very scary and it seems so dangerous. Things can happen in a flash! I do find that singing to the radio can take your mind off of being scared. Maybe it will help you too!!!
Good luck!
