Support Group for Fearful Drivers?

Happy 2006!!

Is learning to drive or improving your driving skills at the top of your 2006 New Year's Resolutions? This blog is dedicated to those with a fear of driving.

I recently received this note from a thoughtful reader:

I have a tremendous fear of driving," she wrote. "This seems to run in my dad's family. In my case, I think it is linked to my ADD."

"Do you know," she asked, "if there is a group online dealing with this subject?"

More comments from the reader:

"I think in my case," she wrote. "I have problems with the following: 1)TERRIFIED of high speed driving (feel less in control) 2) have problems in processing all the different stimuli and get over-stimulated with too many different 'inputs' and 3)have trouble integrating many different tasks, eg. changing lanes, watching the blind spt, keeping the steering on track etc."

Thanks for writing!

I don't really have much in the way of resources, but that description sounds *exactly* like me. People have a particularly difficult time understanding the overload and integration issues, I've found.

I am so fearful of driving..I know I lost my job because I can't drive. I am having a hard time finding a job in my field because I don't drive. I know this is frustrating for my husband. Every year I say this summer I will get my driver's licence. I really need to get over this phobia.

No doubt this is a very informative blog about the driving anxiety.
If you would like to share more about Freeway driving phobia therapy then it will be more helpful for me.

I used to find driving unbearable, almost like a nightmare where I would either black out or lose my mind.

It’s important to understand that feeling scared or uncomfortable while driving is not a sign of weakness, silliness, or strangeness. Rather, it’s a trick of anxiety.

The good news is that this can be overcome. If books aren’t your thing, there are other resources available such as video instructions and lessons.

You don’t need to resort to expensive medications or therapists. I personally took online lessons HERE

In a few months’ time, you’ll look back at this and laugh, just like I did. Just follow step by step, you will be ok.

Firstly I started to drive known routes, and picking time with less traffic than usual. Then you start to add more complicated routes and surroundings with more stress going on.

That’s how you progress. There are several steps after that, but is doable 🙂
